City’s enforcement agencies make nearly 300 arrests

The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police Departments arrested 298 suspects and issued 42 800 fines during weekly patrols. The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 429 calls during the weekend.
On Saturday, 12 July 2025, Metro Police officers were on patrol in the Steenberg area where they arrested three suspects on drug related charges. During the arrests and subsequent search, officers found 13 packets of Tik, one Tik lollie, six whole and one half Mandrax tablets. The suspects, aged 36, 41 and 49 were detained at the Steenberg South African Police Service(SAPS).
Later on the same day, officers were patrolling in Hanover Park, where they received a tip-off from a member of the public about drugs being stored at a residence in Aloe Street. Officers followed up on the information, identified themselves to the homeowner, and requested permission to search the premises. The owner consented, and during the search, officers found 49 Mandrax tablets and seven units of Tik. A 32-year-old man was arrested and detained at Philippi SAPS for the illegal possession of drugs.
On Friday, 11 July 2025, officers were on routine crime prevention patrols in Charl Malan Street, Bellville, when they saw a suspect started to run when he saw the patrol vehicle. Officers responded and apprehended the 27-year-old. During the search, officers found 117 units of heroin in his possession. He was arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS on charges of illegal drug possession.
Metro Police officers arrested 88 suspects and issued 1 894 fines during weekly patrols.
Traffic Services recorded 35 306 transgressions, impounded 241 public transport vehicles and executed 994 warrants of arrest. Officers also arrested 23 suspects of which 17 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for reckless and negligent driving and four for other offences such as a stolen vehicle, false documentation and assault of an officer.
The Law Enforcement Metal Theft Unit arrested four suspects on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 during an enforcement operation with the local Neighbourhood Watch in the Belgravia area. The suspects were found in possession of essential infrastructure equipment (overhead copper cables).
During weekly patrols, Law Enforcement officers arrested 187 suspects and issued 5 600 fines for various transgressions
The PECC dealt with 79 physical assault related incidents and received 147 noise nuisance complaints. The centre also assisted with 43 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
‘The presence of our officers in communities during enforcement patrols is effective in arresting suspects. Officers often received information from members of the community on illegal activities and the swift reaction and follow up result in successful arrests. This is an example of how the community can assist the City in making communities safer and get criminals of the streets and out of the community.’ Arresting those with illegal possession of drugs is stopping further distribution of drugs which could destroy innocent lives and serious crimes being committed. We would like to encourage communities to inform officers of any criminal activities that they know of. Our officers will continue working with other enforcement agencies, Neighbourhood Watches and the South African Police Service,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
